Taipei, Taiwan — August 26, 2019

Ubiik Inc., a leading IoT solution provider for next generation Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), announces that its 60,000+ electricity smart meter network deployment has passed Taiwan Power Company’s second-stage acceptance tests. The milestone comes from a rigorous examination process including the validation of state-of-the-art on-demand meter readings and of the overall connectivity for more than 95% of meters.

Ubiik’s successful outcome is enabled by the most advanced Low Power Wide Area Network technologies (Weightless LPWAN, LTE Cat 1) integrated with highly-reliable Head End System (HES) to provide a turnkey solution monitoring and controlling Taiwan Power’s newly installed meters.

Ubiik will be attending the Asian Utility Week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from September 3 to 4. Presenting at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Booth#AK18, Ubiik will be showcasing its AMI realizations including the lessons learned with Taiwan Power Company.

A breakthrough in Advanced Metering Infrastructure

Ubiik AMI is the groundbreaking innovation in long range, low power, low cost, highly reliable smart metering. After a year-long qualification process started in Spring 2017 and comprising of several technical tests, field trials and pilots, Ubiik has become one of the few approved IoT technology vendors to Taiwan Power for its AMI deployment. This is Taiwan’s largest energy management initiative, with 3 million smart meters to be connected by 2024 and a plan for a total of 12 million smart meters in the following decade.

Suppliers were offered to use the Taiwan AMI-licensed spectrum in the 839MHz to 851MHz bands, or the unlicensed spectrum in 920MHz to 928MHz, or the LTE bands when applicable. Taiwan Power’s challenging requirements including 15-minute interval meter readings, downlink for acknowledgement, controls, on-demand reading requests and over the air firmware updates, could only be met by the few Industrial IoT technologies that are reliably bi-directional.

Ubiik’s uniqueness is to have vertically-integrated hardware, networking and software with the most innovative technologies. Ubiik is the first and only company to offer LPWAN technologies in Taiwan for Electricity AMI, leveraging its implementation of the Weightless LPWAN over the Taiwan AMI licensed spectrum and of LTE Cat 1 for Taiwan Power’s Solar PV Installations.

Ubiik subsequently was awarded a significant part of the first phase of deployments in 2018 – a US$ 8 million 6-year contract for the installation, operation and maintenance of the AMI of more than 60,000 residential, industrial, and Solar PV smart meters in several regions of Taiwan. Ubiik provided Communication (FAN) Modules for the IEC electricity meters, operates a dedicated wireless network based on associated Data Concentration Units (DCU), and supplied a HES interfaced with the Meter Data Management System (MDMS) chosen by Taiwan Power.
